Qualifications Explained
Specialist
Physiotherapist
Specialist physiotherapists have achieved the highest level of qualification in physiotherapy, passing a weekend of clinical exams after a two-year fellowship program.
The program requires completion of case studies, oral presentations, clinical exams, teaching, research and continued professional development.
Following successful completion of the exams, Specialists may use the title of Dr and are admitted into the Australian College of Physiotherapy as a Fellow.

To apply for the Fellowship program, physiotherapists must have:
-
minimum of seven years experience in that field of physiotherapy
-
completed a Masters in their field,
-
have an additional three years of experience in that field since completing their Masters
-
contribute to the progression of physiotherapy through advocacy, leadership, research, clinical skill & teaching
There are currently 34 Specialist Physiotherapists in Victoria.
Masters of Sports Physiotherapy
Masters of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy
Have completed a recognised Australian Masters degree by research or coursework in a relevant field (e.g. Musculoskeletal, Sports, Pain, Women's/Men's/Pelvic Health).
To apply for Masters, you must have completed a physiotherapy degree, and have at least two years experience in that field. The Masters is completed through university, requiring coursework, case studies, clinical placement and clinical exams.
On completion of the Masters, you may use the title of 'APA Titled Physiotherapist', inserting your field (e.g. APA Titled Sports Physiotherapist).
Titling may be obtained through an experiential pathway, where those with exceptional experience complete a similar process through the Australian Physiotherapy Association.
Senior
Physiotherapist
This is recognition of clinical experience, which is acknowledged by the company/employer. There is no standardised measure of a "Senior Physiotherapist", and it is not a recognised title through the Australian Physiotherapy Association. Instead, it is used by clinics to show those with more clinical experience than new graduate physiotherapists.
